2017 Sign off post

Gosh, This year went by so fast. It feels like just yesterday I was walking into the hall as a terrified year seven, not knowing barely anyone and being put in a class filled with almost only strangers that have now become some of my best friends, and I know I know, it's cliche and everything but it really is true. I am going to miss everyone and everything about room 10. To Miss O'Brien, you are by far one of the best teachers I have ever met and I wish I could be in your class again next year! I hope you 2018 class treats you well! To my classmates, Can't wait to see some of you guys up there getting your honours badges and certificates. I really hope we can all still be friends next year even though we are in separate classes, and to my future class for 2018, Be careful, It's gonna get loud. I loved 2017 and I welcome 2018 with welcome arms. Merry Christmas everyone and goodbye.
EDEN OUT.

Scale Drawings

In class, for maths we had to do scale drawings. We could either find an online drawing and enlarge it or we could draw our own and enlarge it. I chose to draw my own. Here it is:

Mandarin learning

Today In Mandarin we make ink artworks of pandas! The first step was to draw the eye shape which looks kind of like a tear drop. Then you had to draw a dot with a squashed w for the mouth. next you draw a circle around it for the head then added two ears on top. for the arms and legs they were just more tear drops.

For the baby you had to draw a circle for an ear and then a semi-circle a little bit higher up for the other ear. Then between both ears and down a bit you draw a vertical oval for the eye. Then draw the face shape connecting the ears to the head then the tear drop. Lastly you connect everything together and there.

Adding Detail

Short Story - Sitting in the dark

Spells fly through the early morning breeze with excited kids running after them. The parents have their coffee in hand laughing. The hippogriffs fly through the air with no care in the world. It’s been 14 years since the battle of Hogwarts and everything has been peaceful. No wars, no fights and especially no death eaters, but this story isn't about Hogwarts or Harry Potter, no, this story is about a girl named Lilith or rather Lily Wood… Lets begin, shall we?

I woke up to my brown owl, Holly singing a sweet tune to wake me. As I begin walking I trip on my slippers and fall face forward onto my floor. “Ughhhh…” I groan as I get up and massage my face. I go over to Holly and let her out of her cage and she flies onto my shoulder. I begin to walk to my door but as I pass my mirror i saw something extra in the reflection. It looked like a black shadow. I blink and look again but this time it was gone… strange. I shrugged it off and walked down the stairs. My parents were on a... ‘business trip’ so I was home alone and had to fend for myself. After I had finished eating I walked back to my mirror and checked again but this time all I saw was the image of a shortish brown haired girl with blue ears and tail. Yes, I am a werewolf but a different kind. I can't turn into a wolf I’m just a human... well a witch with ears and a tail.

I finished getting ready and I walked out to head to my job. It’s the only way I can get money. As I was walking down the street I saw a little girl like me. She looked around eight was being picked on by some other kids. I ran over to her and stood in front of her. “Why are you bullying her?” I asked this kids sternly. “Because, she’s a freak!” One of the older ones almost yelled. “She’s no different to you, she just has ears and a tail!” I was really starting to get frustrated how could adults just sit around and watch this happen? “What is going on here?” A tall lady walked up to us and stood by one of the bullies. “Alex what is happening? Why are you talking to these… mutts.” She said that last word with pure disgust. That’s it. I had had it by then. “Little girl,” I turned to the girl. “Where are your parents?” She turned and pointed over to another werewolf and a wizard. I picked up the girl and walked over to her parents “Ummm… excuse me....” I asked them as I put their child down. They both turned to look at me than at the child. “Mummy, daddy!” The kid yelled as she ran into their arms. I wish I could have a family like that. “Uhmm… Your kid was getting bullied so i just thought that I would bring her too you… I’ll go now…” I turned to walk away but I felt something tug on my shorts. I turned around to see the parents pushing the kid towards me. I crouched down to see what see wanted to say. “Thanks you!” She sung and ran back to her parents, I got back up and smiled at the girl and her parents then walked away.

I walked into work as was immediately ambushed with colour and sweet scents. The toy shop was enchanted to have the smell of your favourite things. For me it was the scent of Lilies and strawberries. I almost got hit by a flying saucer as I went to but my bag down in the employees room. I was walking around the store helping kids get things off shelves but soon I got bored so I took a break and went down to the far corner of the store where no one went. It was my little quiet spot. But as I was walking there I saw a little boy reading a book. “Hello there, what are you reading?” I asked him. No reply. “Hello..?” I asked again this time reaching out to touch but just as I almost touched him something made me apparate.

I appeared in a dark room with no people or objects. I tried to apparate out but there seemed to be something blocking it. I grabbed my wand out “Lumos” I whispered. A bright white light appeared on the end of my wand  but it was still black around me. I sat down and tried to think of what I could do to get out of the abyss between my word and another. I closed my eyes and tried to focus more but all I could think about were my parents and that horrific day. Yes, my parents are dead. They were in a car crash on their way home from a business trip. That’s why I say that they are just on a ‘business trip’, to try forget, to try forgive myself for not being there.

I was sitting in the dark. Alone, scared, but the most important thing was that I had hope, faith and everything like that. I opened my eyes and stood back up. I was determined to get back to my life. Get back to my friends. I grabbed my wand and griped it tight. I may kill myself doing this but if I don't, well we’ll have to see then. A single salty tear rolled down my cheek as I thought of my parent once again. ‘It’s now or never’ I thought. “Confingo” As the word slipped my lips I was thrown back by an explosion of white light.

I opened my eyes with a sudden gasp I was… back..? I was standing in the far corner of the toy shop. I looked around. No time had passed. Only one thing was different… The kid was gone… WHere he was sitting was a note. I picked it up. ‘A NEW EVIL WILL ARISE, LILITH YOU'RE THE FIRST VICTIM, FROM, …… ‘ The last bit was smudged. I was terrified but I don’t believe it. How would they know my name… I needed to do something...

Short Story - Emerald Village

I woke up to red eyes piercing into my soul. “AGHHHH” I screamed loudly as the creature ran back into the forest. I stood up and looked around… Where am I? There was only forest and a pond around me. I couldn’t remember anything. My name… It was… Emma? Yeah Emma that sounds right. I began to walk around the small area with light flooding through the trees.  ‘How did I get here?’ I questioned my brain for some reason hoping for an answer. All I heard were the rustling of the trees in the forest as the inhabitants of it ran around without a care in the world. I walked slowly over to the pond and stared into the water. A girl with waist long brown hair stared back at me. She had two different coloured eyes. One blue and one orange. She looked confused. That’s when I realised. That was me. I looked at myself a little longer until I heard some rustling in the bushes behind me. I turned around sharply just in time to see two red eyes staring back at me. I barely had time to blink before it ran out of its hiding spot and tackled me to the ground of the forest. I closed my eyes ready for the impact of a bite or scratch on my face but I didn’t feel anything. I opened one eye slowly to see a wolf pup sitting on my stomach staring back at me. I moved my hand slightly to see if it would flinch. Nothing. Ok its safe. “Where’s your pack little guy?” I asked it. She only folded her ears to her head making her look sad. I presumed she meant that she got lost. “Hmmm” I hummed staring deeply into her eyes “I’m gonna call you Sophie ok?” I asked and Sophie barked happily in response. She jumped of me and ran into the deep woods. What have I gotten myself into?

I was running into the woods with Sophie when I heard a noise behind us. I turned around just in time to see A group of masked people with swords out ready to swing. One was in front was a boy with a mask covering half of his face, his expression wasn’t rage filled like the others it was… sad? I was dragged out of my thoughts when one of the other screamed at him. “Well? What are you waiting for? Kill her!” The boy looked at me. “Run.” He said bluntly to me. I didn’t hear what he said and I just stood there confused until he ran up to me and grabbed my arm and started sprint, dragging me behind. Sophie ran after us barking. He made a sharp turn and pinned me against a tree. “WHY DIDN’T YOU RUN?” He whispered/screamed. I was speechless I had no idea what to say. Sophie was barking aggressively in the background. “I-uh- m-I” was all I could get out before he dragged me again.

We arrived at what looked like a village. It was in wrecks and there were people hiding under the trees and behind the rubble. “Look” the boy grabbed me and stared into my eyes “can I trust you to keep these people safe?” He asked me. “I-um I- could I know your name first?” I stuttered. “Alex.” He said no longer looking at me. “Emma” I replied. I heard something behind me. My reflexes got the better of me. I pushed Alex to the side and grabbed his sword out of his pocket. Sophie jumped up to my side ready to attack. I heard a gunshot go off and as if in slow motion I saw the bullet fly out of the bush and start flying for Sophie's head. I quickly threw my hand in front of the bullet so I got shot not her. Everything came back to normal speed and the realisation of the pain I was in dawned on me. I pulled back my hand and looked at it. Blood. Blood was everywhere. Dripping down my arm and onto the now red grass. I tried to ignore the pain and gripped the sword again. A figure can out of the bush with a loaded gun. With no hesitation I swung at the figure and slashed its chest, where its heart is. The figure looked up at me and smiled grimly. That's when I noticed something. It had ears and a tail. Before I could move its pitch black eyes stared deeply into mine. I collapsed in pain and started to scream. It felt like someone was repeatedly stabbing me in the chest. I looked back at the figure. It was still smiling like the cheshire cat. That was all I saw before I blacked out.

I woke up and stared up at the roof of what seemed like a house. I turned to my side and saw Alex with his face in his hands. “Alex?” I asked him. He immediately looked up and smiled. He ran over to me. “You're awake!” He cheered. “How long was I out?” I asked him. “A week” He replied as if it was no big deal. I sat up and looked around until my eyes landed on a mirror. It was still me, Emma but… something was different. I had blue ears and a tail. I felt like I could cry. I was no longer myself. “Oh Emma don’t cry” I heard Alex say from behind me. He walked up to me. “So many great things have happened while you were out!” He said. “Like what?” I said doubting him. He whistled loudly and in came a wolf with blood red eyes. “Sophie…” I whispered. The wolf jumped up onto my lap. I could feel my tail swishing to and fro behind me. “There’s something else I need to show you…” Alex told me as he grabbed my wrist. He pulled me outside and I saw a village. The very same village I was at a week ago, except, it was built back to normal. “Welcome to the village, your village.” He said looking into my eyes. They were filled with pure joy and excitement. “My… village?” I asked “Yes your village” He said “You’re the new lord!” I was startled and speechless. A few seconds went by. “What’s its name? The village I mean” I asked Alex, he just shrugged. “Haven’t decided yet huh?” I asked him. “How about Emerald, Emerald village?” Alex looked deep in thought. “Sounds good” He said finally. I looked out into the distance. This was the village, my village, Emerald village

Guest Speaker - Duane Kayle

On Friday HNI had a guest speaker. Duane Kayle, a three time paralympic gold medalist. He taught us not to give up on our dreams and told us his story with resilience and perseverance. I think he is a pretty amazing dude and I hope one day I can have a story like his to tell to others.

Athletics Learning - Shotput

Some people think that discus is just like throwing a frisbee but in reality it’s much more than that. There are certain ways you need to move your foot or how you need to hold the discus properly and get a good shot. There are places you can and can't step and you also need to get your timing perfect.

there are a lot of techniques to learn and perfect in discus here are some points to learn
  • You need to put your body weight on your right leg near the end of the swing.
  • You curl the tips of your fingers over the edge of the discus but keep the thumb on the top.
  • You spin two times before letting go
  • Don't step out of the circle or you will get disqualified
  • Keep your arm as high as your shoulder
  • Spin the discus off you index finger not your pinky

We’ll start with the easiest thing to do: holding the discus. When you hold a discus you hold the top of the discus and curl your finger tips over the edge of the discus and place your thumb on the top. Don’t curl your thumb over the side of the discus or curl you finger completely over or your throw won’t go as far. Make sure that you hold it in the proper discus way not like a frisbee. You can practice holding the discus and swinging it by letting your arm fall by your side and swing your arm up and down.
Next we will focus on throwing the discus. You should spin 2 times before letting go. You need to throw it with your arm at shoulder height and let the discus go by letting it roll off your index finger and it should go in the opposite direction to where your body it turning.
Now time for some harder things. When your turning you need to put your weight on your dominant leg so your discus can fly further. Now for the most important part DON'T STEP OUT OF THE CIRCLE! If you do you will be disqualified.

I hope that you now understand how to do discus and that hopefully you now know how to throw like a pro!

Term 3 Highlights

Wow, Term 3 is almost over already, just two more days left, this has been a very... Well, interesting term with social dancing and puberty going on. There were a lot and I mean A LOT of ups and downs through this journey of awkwardness. But none of the downs matter anymore because the nightmare of those memories will be over soon because no one will remember them! So I'm going to say some highlights! Yay!

- Puberty: Well I guess it is not that much of a "Highlight" but it was still pretty interesting and fun to learn about what is going to go on inside our bodies as we get older.

- TimberNook!: There was a lot of adventuring and physical work but at the same time, it was also a bunch of fun. I most liked getting to make the giant people out of materials we could find. (Also the marshmallows were delicious!)

-Social Dancing: I reckon that even though the actual social is tomorrow the practices have been awesome and I hope that next year I can  come in and help the year 7's with learning the dances

Speech - Roller Derby

Kia ora
Ko Eden ahau
No reira, tena koutou, tena koutou, tena koutou katoa

Skaty Scary and Tower of Terror are banging through each other's team like charging bulls! Skaty gets through and skates ahead, she has become the lead jammer. Tower has now broken free and they are racing for the points. Skaty Scary has got two points and just before Tower of Terror gets her first point Skaty calls time out! What am I talking about? …Roller Derby! For those of you who don’t do  Roller Derby, it’s not just skating and barging into people, it also has some MAJOR health benefits and today I will tell you some of them.

Roller Derby has great fitness benefits that assists weight loss, improves your cardiovascular plus much more! Did you know that doing just 30 minutes competitively can burn 450 calories or more? Roller Derby isn’t just about winning but it’s skating at a fast pace and it includes a high adrenaline rush, the high intensity burns a lot of calories to help make you fitter and faster. Roller Derby also helps build muscle memory because by doing certain maneuvers like sticky skating you are using muscles that you haven’t used before. It helps build your strength by the constant side-to-side movements and you always have to be in a squatting position while you are skating for better balance when barging into other players.

Roller Derby also helps with things like teamwork and improves your self-confidence. These are very important skills to have in everyday life, and I know you might be wondering, how does barging into people and skating around a track improve your leadership and self-confidence?! Well, it improves self-confidence because usually when you are practicing you are mainly just skating so if you have previously been stressing out or feeling bad about something you instead have to focus on moving your body the right way. It improves your leadership because you work in teams of five and you have to tell them if they would need to move left, right, up or down. Or to tell them to move closer, but also you are listening to other people and letting them lead you.

It also improves your mental health because it lets you release your anger by barging into other people and helps you de-stress to have a healthier mind. You also have to remember how to do certain moves like knee taps and T-stops so there are a lot of things to remember and that can help with a lot of stuff with having a healthier mind. Last of all it also helps to build a healthy heart because scientists have proven that doing 20 to 30 minutes of roller skating can help you improve your fitness and lower the risk of heart disease.

So those are some of the health benefits but not all of them there are still plenty more benefits to Roller Derby and Skating. Although you need to know how to skate to join, if you think this is a good sport for you don’t just think about the roughness but  how much it can help you with your health and I hope that one day you might join me, Sweetie Demon -  on the track to foster having a healthy body and strong mind!  Image result for roller derby

Social Dancing - Favouite song

We (Sheppard and Hillary) have started our social dancing practice for our social at the end of the term. We are learning a lot of cool songs and today I am going to attempt to teach you my favorite song (sea cruise) by typing! Great! Here is the song:

Grapevine to the right clap, Grapevine to the left clap, kick left for, kick right foot, back two three four turn to the left, turn to the right, turn to the left, shake for a bit and then repeat!

Inquiry weeks 7&8

Healthy Bodies - Strong Minds
Weeks 7&8

Global Learning Intention:  We are learning about being healthy.

BIG IDEA: By keeping physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually fit, we are holistically looking after our HAUORA, (Health).

Big Questions for learning weeks 7&8:
What is a stereotype and how can it affect the way I think about myself and others?

Authentic Contexts:
Stereotypes
The way different cultures see beauty
Positive body image
The effect of the media on self perception

Profile photos

  1. Photos from google. Use these if you want.

  2. Pin the profile photos around the classroom. Divide students into eight groups and give each group several profile sheets from Copysheet: Profile. Allocate a starting photo for each group and allow them a set period of time to come up with a profile of that person. Each group then moves on to the next photo, until they have worked with all the photographs.

Completed profiles

Consider: How accurate were your profiles? All of them had at least one thing pretty accurate.
What sort of things did you make mistakes about? (Age, hobbies ...) My group kept getting     hobbies and ages.
Why do you think your profiles weren’t always accurate? I don't really judge people that much until I actually get to know them so it is extremely hard for me.
What information did you use to make your profiles? (The look of the person, what they were wearing, their culture, their age, what you think you know about people like that ...) well I was the one writing down the things but I figured out the one of the girls were a waitress because she had a menu with her.
Is this a fair thing to do? Why or why not? No because sometimes someone might have white hair but that doesn’t mean that they are necessarily old.
What should you do before you make decisions about what a person is like? (Really get to know them, find out about their personality, talk to them ...) Talk to them and get to know them
Create a list of the dangers of stereotyping people into categories.
  1. You might accidentally spread rumours about them.
  2. If they find out or you ask them about what you think you could really hurt them.
  3. They might not be who you think they are.
  4. You could miss out on a great friend.
·

Knowing and Respecting People

1.       Before I make a judgement about a person I should:  Talk to them and/or get to know them first.

2.       It is unwise to stereotype people because: You could really hurt their feelings plus you might miss out on a good friend

3.       We can make people in our school and community who we think are different feel
welcome by: Talking to them and letting them join in so you actually can know who they are.

4.       In future when I meet new people I will try to … Get to know them.

Cultural Perceptions of Beauty
  • Brainstorm – What do you think is the perfect body? Draw/ cut pictures out of magazine as to what they think. the perfect body is?Screenshot 2017-09-13 at 13.39.56.png
  • Is there such a thing? No
  • Are children and adults pressured to LOOK a certain way? In some places but not all
  • What is vanity? How does it affect ‘The perfect body?”

  • Culture – What is it?

My ideas and thoughts...
The Customised Body – The perfect body?
What practices are you aware of?

In some cultures the ideal body can be very different to the perception and beliefs in New Zealand.

http://share100.goingviralposts.biz/coca-cola-campaign-aims-to-remove-labels/      Stereotypes in the dark      An interesting point of view

This is a more modern approach to scarification and downright silly body alterations.  My point of view there.
