Athletics Learning - Shotput

Some people think that discus is just like throwing a frisbee but in reality it’s much more than that. There are certain ways you need to move your foot or how you need to hold the discus properly and get a good shot. There are places you can and can't step and you also need to get your timing perfect.

there are a lot of techniques to learn and perfect in discus here are some points to learn
  • You need to put your body weight on your right leg near the end of the swing.
  • You curl the tips of your fingers over the edge of the discus but keep the thumb on the top.
  • You spin two times before letting go
  • Don't step out of the circle or you will get disqualified
  • Keep your arm as high as your shoulder
  • Spin the discus off you index finger not your pinky

We’ll start with the easiest thing to do: holding the discus. When you hold a discus you hold the top of the discus and curl your finger tips over the edge of the discus and place your thumb on the top. Don’t curl your thumb over the side of the discus or curl you finger completely over or your throw won’t go as far. Make sure that you hold it in the proper discus way not like a frisbee. You can practice holding the discus and swinging it by letting your arm fall by your side and swing your arm up and down.
Next we will focus on throwing the discus. You should spin 2 times before letting go. You need to throw it with your arm at shoulder height and let the discus go by letting it roll off your index finger and it should go in the opposite direction to where your body it turning.
Now time for some harder things. When your turning you need to put your weight on your dominant leg so your discus can fly further. Now for the most important part DON'T STEP OUT OF THE CIRCLE! If you do you will be disqualified.

I hope that you now understand how to do discus and that hopefully you now know how to throw like a pro!
